Bean in a Jar Experiment Observation Journal

The Bean in a Jar experiment is something I did with my kids to help them understand how a seed grows into a plant in a very simple and real way. Instead of just reading about plants, they actually get to watch the changes happening every day, which makes the learning more meaningful for them.

We placed a bean seed in a clear jar with cotton and a little water so they could see everything clearly. Each day, we checked the seed together and talked about what we noticed. At first, there was not much change, but after a few days, they started seeing the seed swell, then a small root appeared, and slowly a tiny plant began to grow.

What I like about this activity is that it teaches patience and observation. The kids become more curious and start asking questions. It naturally builds their interest in science without needing anything complicated.

To support this activity, I also created a simple observation journal for them. Each day, they just look at their bean and draw what they see. No writing pressure, just simple drawing and noticing changes. This makes it easy even for younger children to take part.

I really enjoy making resources for kids like this because I love seeing them learn through simple, hands-on activities. It also helps other parents and teachers who are looking for easy ideas they can use without stress.

I like to share these pintables as free resources so more children can benefit from them. My goal is to make learning fun, simple, and accessible for everyone, whether in classrooms or at home.
